Domingo German Has Been a Godsend For The New York Yankees

Yankees 5 Orioles 3

Yankees 3 Orioles 1

Winning both games of a doubleheader, no matter the opponent, is not an easy task. Anyone will tell you that. Well, the Yankees just took both games of their single elimination DH against the O’s fairly easily. Last year they would have split or lost both games. Last year they couldn’t even beat the O’s in consecutive games. As of right now they’ve won 5 in a row against Baltimore and are doing a great job beating anyone who comes in front of them. Today they improved to a season high 10 games over .500 which is remarkable for who they have in their daily lineups.

Cy Young Domingo

Right now Domingo German is 8-1 with a 2.41 ERA. He is your American League All-Star starting pitcher as I type these words. That’s just a fact and there is no disputing it. No one in the AL has been better than that man. Today he went seven strong innings, allowing just one run, one walk, while striking out eight. In the 7th inning, with the Yanks up just one, German loaded the bases with two outs for Joey Rickard. Boone opted to keep Domingo in the game for one more batter. He proceeded to get Rickard to ground out to third to end the inning. I loved the move because it gave Domingo so much confidence moving forward. Getting out of that jam and completing seven innings right there in a big spot was huge for him mentally. He’s our horse right now and he needs to experience big moments like that now, so when August-September-October come, he’s ready for it. Domingo German is this team’s ace right now and it’s not close. He has eight wins and it’s May 15th! Every time he pitches it is appointment television. I love Domingo German.

Gleyber Day

I think it’s safe to say Wednesday in the Bronx was Gleyber Day. The Yankees 22 year old Baby Bomber blasted not one, not two, but three homers between the two games.

Gleyber has been red hot recently, entering today hitting .349 over his last 16 games, but only home homer to show for it. Today he made up for that with three bombs. The man is only 22 years old and getting better and better by the day. We have him in our lives for about the next 15 years? I love Brian Cashman.

The Bullpen

The bullpen has really been a crutch to lean on lately. The foursome of Ottavino-Britton-Kahnle-Chapman has simply been lights out. They are really living up to the hype that we went into this season dreaming about. If we have a lead and they’re coming in, the game is over. Between the two games today they combined for 5.2 IP 4 hits 11 strikeouts and zero walks. You add a possibly fixed Chad Green and then Dellin Betances in a month or so to the mix? Forget about it. The bullpen has become a weapon meanwhile Boston’s pen has blow leads to Colorado in back to back nights. Beautiful.

JA Happ’s Press Conference

Happ was pulled “early” in Game 1 after just 64 pitches in the middle of the 6th inning. He wasn’t happy about it and neither were some fans considering there was another game to be played, but I liked the move. Happ is my least trusted guy right now in the rotation. He’s been plagued by the home run ball all season so far and it was happening again today with Mancini and Nunez taking him deep. You have a fully rested bullpen and it’s the 6th inning of a two run game. Use your weapon and win the game. Don’t worry about the next game, win the one you’re playing. Look what happened? No one threw more than 15 pitches in relief of Game 1, and they were all fine to be used again in Game 2. Domingo even made it easy on everyone and went seven frames. I hate playing for the future in those spots and I completely agreed with Boone and the nerd department there.

Miggy Andujar Needs Surgery And Is Done For The Year

This is the right move. Andujar needs to get the surgery and repair his torn labrum. He’s not right and the Yankees have the depth to replace him and keep the line moving. I suggested on The Short Porch before Gio Urshela was even a thing that he should just get the surgery instead of trying to play through it. Look what happened to Greg Bird when he tried it do it? Disaster. We have Gleyber, Urshela, LeMahieu, Estrada and Didi in a month or so. They can survive without Andujar 100%. Not to mention this frees up the DH spot for Voit or Giancarlo in the future and improves the defense without question.

New Short Porch out tomorrow where we break this all down. Subscribe subscribe !
